What will
prospective employers think of an online degree?
An overview of online degrees:
The Internet has worked as a better channel for heightening the name
of distance learning. Distance learning attained recognition through the
internet. Today, distance learning is being considered by various well
known institutes through out. Nevertheless, the Internet not only promoted
the name of online degrees but also demoted it to a large extent. A report
in the US said that there were 400 online diploma degree-providing companies
in 2003, and this rate is increasing rapidly. Providing fraudulent degrees
is money making business, earning nearly $500 annually.
Hence, the negative sides of online degrees have minimized its importance
a lot.
Authorized degrees:
‘Good stories are often spoiled by bad headlines’
Above and beyond all the negative aspects, there are various institutes
that provide online authorized degrees. These online degrees serve as
a substitute for on-campus degrees. Online authorized degree providers
also facilitate people by offering online video lectures. These institutes
conduct examinations that are employed to assure that students are completely
trained and eligible for the degree they are about to acquire. Through
this process, students who get the degree are truly worth it. Scandals
about these online degrees have generally given a bad impression to employers.
They are widely taken up with the scandal. This is the reason why online
degrees are not accepted widely.
Accreditation:
To improve the prevailing circumstances, the National Education Board
of the U.S. government has approved 6 agencies responsible for providing
academic accreditation to the educational institutes that provide online
degrees. This method is adopted to distinguish legal institutes from illegal
ones. This method also provides assurance to students, so that they know
that a university is authorized. Moreover, there is also DETC (The Distance
Education and Training Council) responsible for providing authorization
to the distant learning providers. DETC is recognized by the U.S. Department
of Education and CHEA (Council for Higher Education Accreditation). In
addition, there are also special programs that are accredited by these
departments.
How do the accredited institutes help?
Accredited institutes ensure the person’s qualification. Today,
employers largely consider degrees by these accredited institutes. The
accreditation of these institutes also assures employers that a person
carrying this degree is worth it.
Employer’s View:
No one can change another’s perspective. Employers at times believe
it and at times they don’t. Employers cannot help it. The rise in
the fashion of bogus degrees has minimized opportunities for online degree
holders. An employer at times really gets confused whether a person holding
the degree is well trained and educated or not.
